Who’s Who at Omaha Media Group: Corey

Who’s Who at Omaha Media Group: Corey

First Name:
Corey

Office Nickname:
“DAMN IT, COREY…”, “Lord Corey Netbreaker, Sunderer of Connections, First Of His Name, Father of Lag, Player of That Chrome Dinosaur Game”

What the heck do you do here?
Whatever y’all tell me to do. Code web sites, animate the odd SVG, write web scrapers, run to Walgreens for drinks, break the internet...

How do you take your coffee?
However Scooter’s does it?

Describe your daily at Monstrous Media Group:
9am, walk in. Check in with the Social den. Check work email. Check Asana. Pick instrumental focus playlist from Spotify. Start coding. Think about lunch. Check the clock: 10am. Keep coding, with a snack. Check the clock: 11am. Keep coding, mental note to check in about lunch at next break point. Check the clock: 12pm. “What’s everyone doing for lunch?” Realize Steph has been in the office all morning. Eat lunch. Back to coding. Much less clock-checking after eating. Check out cool thing John wants to show off. Back to coding. 5pm, go home. Play with dog. Have major revelation about project roadblock. Go to sleep. Wake up. Forget major revelation about project roadblock. Go to work. Lather, rinse, repeat.

What’s your favorite tool to use?
Python. Scraping the web to recover client content is a blast because it’s always a new puzzle to solve. How do I download and unzip thousands of photos for this client off of a vendor’s server with little to no documentation? Carefully, with automated tests, and while saving dozens of man-hours - that’s how.

Do you have a desk/office essential?  If so, what?
Nerf N-Strike Elite Strongarm Blaster. Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.

If you could offer up one piece of industry advice, what would it be?
Never stop learning. You never know enough. Keep picking up new skills and trying new ways to do something, even if it probably won’t work or isn’t the best way. You’ll most likely end up learning something along the way, even if you have to do it over again.

What’s your social platform of choice?
Facebook. I knew I was getting prematurely old when I couldn’t figure out why anyone would bother with Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, or any of the newer stuff. I have it all on my phone to try and keep up, but I still don’t use a lot of it.

What are you listening to?
A Spotify Focus playlist. It’s not working at the moment, but there’s usually a ~75% chance it helps me knock a bunch of tasks out super fast. The other ~25% I need third wave Ska.

Favorite industry-knowledge-gaining resource:
Reddit. Google. StackOverflow. CodeSchool.com. There are too many great ones, I can’t pick just one.

Happy hour drink:
Whiskey Coke. Simple, easy, delicious.

Fun fact about yourself:
I narrowly escaped death in 8th grade while working on the stage crew of our high school’s production of My Fair Lady. The rigging holding up a curtain to the side of the stage fell and cut my ear, requiring a few stitches (3, I think?). I still have an itty bitty scar. The doctor felt it was necessary to tell me that a few inches to the left and I would have been “eating through a straw” for the rest of my life. I’d later earn the roles of Senex in “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum”, Reverend Shaw in “Footloose”, and Professor Harold Hill in “The Music Man”, all performed on that same stage.

Yes, there are recordings.

No, you may not see them.
