Why content matters in UX Design

There are many working design aspects that all need to be in harmony with one another to provide the best user experience possible, and while one element is not technically under User Experience (UX) design methodology, it is just as important as other elements of the design process.

What is User Experience (UX) design?

UX design is the overall execution of the entire website’s overall functionality from beginning to end. How will it flow? What will confuse users? How do I get them to X page to fill out X form? Loading speeds? Mobile user experience?

While the site is not designed for each individual user, it can provide a personalized experience that promotes a better overall impression of the company. This design element is oftentimes forgotten about until something breaks on the website and the team has an “ah-ha” moment!

While the design is a critical component of the overall first experience, without proper functionality in place, the design doesn’t even matter. You could have the most perfect website design, but without UX design behind it, it will be one of the “ugliest” sites out there.

Not only does it affect the aspect above, but a large majority of a website is content-based; which means, content has to properly design and written to provide the same positive user experience.

Why UX content matters

While content is technically not a part of the UX design process, it directly impacts the user experience that UX design works hard to perfect. All content should reflect what the users’ search intention is looking to answer.

Are they ready to purchase a product? What about downloading an e-book? Are they simply in the beginning researching stage of their journey? All of this matters because this is how you will write the content. Any user experience content written for a potential customer is going to vary from an existing client.

First impressions matter

Everything matters on the Internet. There shouldn’t be any posts, content, website launches, or anything else that isn’t up to par with the needs of consumers. First impressions are everything in a digital world.

The tone and language of a website are part of the user experience content and its first impression. If the wording is difficult to understand or the tone is off for the industry, even the simplest of greetings can be misinterpreted.

What is slang in one part of the world can be offensive to others in a different part of the world. It is important to use language that is easy for your audience to understand with a tone of voice that matches the language.

Get them to stay

Great UX content is one of the most important ways to get consumers to stay on your website. The longer they are reading through content, products/ services, or filling out forms, the better the chance that they will finish their customer journey.

This not only gets a potential client to stay on the website, but also provides the ability to show that the company is the industry leader with the proper content, verbiage, and tone of voice.

Hook, line, and sinker

While your potential customer is on the website, is the moment that you need to align content and design with one another to finish those company goals that need to be met. This means Call-to-Actions (CTAs) that are strong and persuasive without being too demanding and pushy that have a proper design to get consumers to finish the final part of their journey.

UX design and content go hand-in-hand with each other. UX alone cannot communicate the importance of the products or services, and content alone cannot keep a user on the website. Better integration and design can only improve the overall experience that each and every user will have interacting with a website.
