Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King's birthday, January 15. The floating holiday is similar to those set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

Who Was Martin Luther King Jr.?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an American Baptist minister and activist, was the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. Born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, King is best remembered for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent activism.

King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and later became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Through his activism, he played a pivotal role in ending the legal segregation of African-American citizens in the United States and creating the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

King's leadership in the civil rights movement included many highly publicized protests, culminating in his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech delivered during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This speech, delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, called for ending racism and for civil and economic rights. It has since become one of the most famous speeches in history.
